The Portland Timbers have mutually parted ways with head coach Phil Neville, as announced by the club on Monday. This decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 3-1 home loss to the San Jose Earthquakes during the Walmart Saturday Showdown, marking a challenging moment for the team as they enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup break. The Timbers are now actively searching for a new head coach to lead them forward. Owner Merritt Paulson expressed his appreciation for Neville's leadership and dedication to both the club and the Portland community. Neville, who previously managed Inter Miami CF, joined the Timbers ahead of the 2024 campaign and recorded a regular-season record of 27 wins, 31 losses, and 24 draws. During his tenure, the Timbers qualified for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in both seasons, although they were eliminated in the first round each time. Currently, the Timbers find themselves in 13th place in the Western Conference with a record of 4 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, amid a three-game winless streak. In his farewell, Neville thanked the Timbers Army for their unwavering support and expressed his hope for the club's future success. The Timbers will return to action on July 16 against Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC, with interim coaching decisions pending the hiring of a new head coach. General manager Ned Grabovoy acknowledged Neville's enthusiasm and passion, noting the need for improvement moving forward.
